    Wrenching on their own rigs?

I do mostly maintenance and bolt-ons to my rigs, but if there was ever anything major short of a transmission issue, my boyfriend would do it and i'd play tool getter. Ironically, he knows a lot about fixing rigs, but doesn't follow proper maintenance, so he has to wrench a LOT on his rigs.

    Communications and Remote Locations

I'm quite interested in the DeLorme InReach and its capabilities in very mountainous regions. We're the end of the line to start with, roughly 100*100 miles of mountainous terrain to Montana and mountain shadows are a killer. Here at the cabin we rely on satellite internet for comms. it's even...

2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

Yeah, getting close, though. Elk City Wagon Rd and Pilot Knob are open and cleared. There's a group that's supposed to do Magruder then Lolo the end of July, might be close!

Other Uses For Your Recovery Gear

Our winches get used a lot for dragging trees out for firewood, hi-lifts for getting sheds, etc., on rollers for moving and of course aid in processing game and livestock.

Feel like trailing, too dang hot!!!

Drove up the Lolo Motorway. Made it to 6200 before hitting snow. It was 81F. Temp at my cabin is about 90F now and the people down in the Valley are dealing with 100F, so they are starting to flock up to the swimming holes around my place. Stay Cool and enjoy that brew!

2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

For anyone planning drive the Lolo Motorway this seaso , I popped up to see what the conditions were. This trip I made it just shy of Rocky Ridge Lake, elev. 6200, before hitting snow and ponding on the trail. FR 103 is clear and passable and 500 from Canyon Junction to Pete Forks is open...

Why Did You Build Your Rig?

Overlanding was not really a factor, it just became a bonus. We built up our rigs since we built our cabin offgrid, several miles past any services (plowing, maintenance, emergency services) and have to be self-reliant. We also have to answer Fire and EMT toneouts and wilderness fire patrol so...

    Foraging wild food

Last night I sauteed some white clover leaves, much like spinach, and used the blossoms for a sweet tea this morning with before mentioned strawberries. Clover leaves do taste best prior to flowering, however. I've stopped growing spinach since clovers, miner's lettuce, lambsquarters, etc., all...

    Foraging wild food

Most needles will work (spruce, pine, fir....) They are best when the new growth appears and the needles are bright and tender, which is right now in my part of ID. Just chop up and steep like regular tea. Adding some of those strawberries is a nice touch as well. You can make a forest honey...

    Foraging wild food

We practice almost daily, both on the trail and on the property, both edible and medicinal. This morning was harvesting alpine strawberries and needle tea for breakfast.

    Overland Cooking and Recipes

Not a meal, but my favorite hot drink is hot chocolate with powdered Ghost or Reaper peppers and a pinch of cinnamon, but you could sub cayenne for the superhot stuff. The hot drink paired with the capsacin really warms you up.

    Air Rifles

I have a Gamo Big Cat. Break barrel. Not stealthy at all, about as loud as a .22lr, but it's great for taking small grouse and rabbit and not wasting .22 ammo.

    Camp Site Tips and Tricks.

Good tip! Using ziplocs and freezing flat works well, too. Then you have "ice" to keep the other goods cool at the front end of the trip.

    Cordless Chainsaw

I was thinking of this vid in the backcountry yesterday. We cleared a 1/2 mi of blowdown on a blocked trail. I tracked 35 trees, average 12-15"dia. fir was about 80 cuts, just to clear a path (I didn't count bucking cuts). Given the size of the trees, that'd take 2, maybe 3 batteries, not bad at...

Dirty Dog pet divider, anyone have issues?

I ordered up the Dirty Dog front seat pet divider for my Jeep Wrangler to keep my 4 yr old Lab and 8 yr old Borador out of the cockpit. The installation was simple, looked great and we were on our way for a quick spin in the woods. The dogs protested by trying to push their muzzles through the...

Overland Gear For Winter: How to Prepare for Cold!

I always carry an extra set of lightweight waterproof/breathable outer layers, and 2-3 extra sets of gloves. I always wind up digging out something, and messing with chains, recovery gear, etc. for folks who try to go for a Winter drive and bury their rig. I'm always getting my gloves wet. But...

    Overland tunes

If I'm traveling through several States and have time, I try to make playlists of artists from the region of songs about the region in various genres, including a short audiobook. But there's always Johnny Cash and RUSH on board.
