2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

The Ranger Stations are pretty conservative for safety reasons, but from most reports there's still a decent amount of snow past Saddle Camp (that's as far as I've gone) on the LM. I haven't been up past Headquarters yet, don't have a trip to Wallace until August, but I posted in a local info...

    Sleeping setups in rig

I rigged up these screens and curtains from a cheap black sheet in my JKU for a trip last week. I used the magnet trick on the rear windows, though magnets are on the inside, and paracord strung through my MBRP roof rack mounts on the hard top windows. Right now I just have the "curtains"...

Dirty Dog pet divider, anyone have issues?

I know, Im confused. We've seen failures on Search and Rescue webbing on testing, so it's not impossible. I sent two sets of pics on two separate occasions now. No response on either. I'm glad everything is working out for you guys !

Mounting both CB and Ham antennae on hood lip mounts.

The install has taken WAY more time than I thought, but more due to acquiring parts. Apparently the Idaho mtns are two weeks from anywhere and the comm shop an hour away closed down for a three week vacation. But I finally have the antennas, mounts and Cobra 75 installed and the Yaesu 8900...

    Overland Weight reduction

I'm seriously considering adding an X jack to the kit as well. Haven't used one, but like you said, paired with another jack would be a good piece of kit. Sounds like a great thread.

    Arizona to Montana and back

That's a good write up. Only thing I've found is the road changes every year due to slides, etc. I haven't ran it yet this year, but they repaired a major wash in the road last year , which smoothed out a few rough spots. I live in the area and my older buddies always start with "when I was your...

    Arizona to Montana and back

Just be self sufficient. Nothing too bad, it's a narrow, rocky, dusty road with no services. Top up in Elk City, Make sure your rig is in good operating condition with good tires. It's not highly technical, but some folks get a little sketched when a rig comes from the other end and one has to...

    Arizona to Montana and back

The trip from Darby across towards Dillon is nice if you want to stay off the freeway a bit more, and there's also the Skalkaho Pass, which you could enter around Hamilton. http://www.visitmt.com/listings/general/scenic-highway/skalkaho-pass.html

    Arizona to Montana and back

We It's open now, but not for the faint of heart. Weather can change on a dime and most go in groups. I'd recommend 2 days minimum. We're supposed to go around the 22nd.

    Arizona to Montana and back

EDIT- my tablet wigged out and showed a Moscow route, sorry about that. Seems a natural to take the Magruder Corridor from Elk City to Darby, but it's an adventure! But at a minimum, I'd highly recommend not missing Hwy 12 between Kooskia and Lolo as opposed to heading up the 95 at Grangeville.

    Overland Weight reduction

Spot on! This is the same for Mountain Bikes (weight, rotational force, etc.) but I went through quite a few brands before I settled on the 62lb Grabber AT2, I could barely lift some of the others, but the "drop, bounce, mount" technique on the spare, sure helps. But speaking of Mtn Biking and...

    Overland Weight reduction

We do a LOT of recovery. we live in the Idaho Mtns and need rigs equipped for self rescue, but most is on other vehicles. In Winter, we pull out 2-3 rigs a week since we live past where the plows go and flatlanders think they want to come up here and play in the snow. My jacks mostly get used...

    Overland Weight reduction

I switched out the Hi-Lift on one of my Jeeps for a 6k Unijack. 5-6 lb savings plus no need for a separate base ( 2-3lbs) and easier for me to handle. Have 35's and lifted. I'll probably switch out the other as well. Also switched out my wood handled Pulaski for fiberglass, more for sun...

What do you use? Ham radio or CB radio?

I run CB and a 2m/70 in my rigs, but with the mountain shadows in the region I spend most of my time, I don't rely on them for much more than the rare close proximity trail buddy. But having a CB is invaluable if you are near logging areas and drop in on them running loads.

2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

EDIT- Just looked up the road status and they officially listed Magruder as open, someone must've cut the trees so autos can get through, lol. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5158968.pdf Talked to a buddy down in Elk City today who stopped in the Ranger Station for me...

2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

I just ran into a group of Enduros down in town this past weekend, they tried from the Powell end and got caught in 6-8' berms so doubled back and came down the 12 into Kamiah. We have 90+ degree temps scheduled for the next two weeks at my cabin (3300ft), so probably 80 up top. It will...

Velcro, do you use it in your rig?

I had an extra small molle bag from another project and I keep some doo dads (lighter, sanitizer, mini-light, etc.). Just threw on some sew on to the back of the bag.
