The Husky Bus – A future resident of Alaska

Slow rainy day down her in SAN so spending it with the pups and hanging with my girls. “Happy wife – Happy life” so they say. Time to do some research & planning for this project. I was going through notes and sponsor contract agreements from our last big purpose build... looking for a...

The Husky Bus – A future resident of Alaska

Oh trust me... I'm all over the mushing network. But I wont bother my guys. As I'm sure you know, managing a Race Kennel is expensive and year-round hard work without any days off. Those guys live to race and don't have time for distractions. Because this project's design is for Veteran's...

Old to Camping New to Overlanding

Rhode Island... I love that place! Had the opportunity to visit twice (back in the day) participating in the International Military Parachute Competition. Welcome to OB!

The Husky Bus – A future resident of Alaska

Extreme cold I guess is relative to the traveler(s), the dog(s) and what they are doing at the time. Typically, the two Kennels we are affiliated with run seasonal operations between the race season… loosely between Spring (April-May) and the Holidays (Nov-Dec). Sled Dog tours are an integral...

Paper maps? still a thing or no?

Absolutely right. Technology will always fail (Murphy's Law). Basic navigation is a must in my family. As example, for all my kids' and grandkids' on their 10th Birthday they all got/get the same thing from me... A Compass, Protractor, and an extended backpacking trip where they learn basic...

The Husky Bus – A future resident of Alaska

Moving 'The Husky Bus' intro to its own string in order to get more visibility for advice and feedback. From here I’ll try and post updates and changes as they happen. This is minimum budget, purpose-built project. We are building this truck to eventually live fulltime up in Fairbanks Alaska...

What's your latest camping gear purchase, and what caused you to buy it?

My latest purchase was a "Ploy"... I picked up a Gazelle T4, a Teton XL Cot, a Memory Foam Mattress (for the cot), and an LED Fan & Lantern. Its a 'Glamping' set up for Wifey. She was ecstatic! Which was the reaction I was looking for. The "Ploy" was to distract her with the fore mentioned...

Paper maps? still a thing or no?

Nice points. My glovebox is my Map File Drawer. Has charts, maps, notes, grease pens, protractors and there's a lensatic compass in all four door panels. If I ever got myself lost, I'd never be able to live down the embarrassment. Ha-ha!

Hey Charles! Welcome aboard. I'm a victim of Texas A&M and more specifically the Brayton Fire Fields. In fact I'm wearing a TEEX shirt right now. Always gotta represent the best Firefighting Training School in the World! Happy Overlanding! ~ Woody

    Forrest bathing

Thanks Dennis. I come from a long line of LEOs (Dad, God Father, Uncles, Cousins... most SFPD). My dad discouraged my brothers and I from pursuing careers in the family business, yet we ended up in more gunfights than the rest of the family. Ha-ha! I do get out near you on occasion. I'll be...

    Forrest bathing

Hi Dennis, Thank you for sharing your story. It resonates with me in many ways. I’m twice retired (currently working in career #3). I spent 21 years in the Military and 16 in the Fire Service. My time in uniform(s) dealing with 24/7 stress and trauma presented me my own dragons. I dealt with...

    Found it

    Post Up Your Cockpit

Exactly... I like that... "what works for them is what counts". A little more about my use case... I have a Mobile Repeater and Intercom occupying the sides of my console, which takes potential Mic locations I would have preferred. I have a hearing deficit so I needed to put remote speakers...

    Post Up Your Cockpit

I know, I know... cluttered for most people (and this is without my phone in the cradle and the iPad). I like to say its what happens when you spend a lifetime in military vehicles, helicopters and firefighting apparatus. Its multi mission capable and comfortable for me.

Is this Coleman stove any good?

Like everyone else has said... take care of it, and it will outlive us all. For mine, I even have the hose to refill 1lb Bottles from one of my 20lb cylinders. That said, I haven't used my Coleman in 5-6 years. I've been using a Camp Chef Explorer with a 5lb tank. I get heckled by my travel...
