Last minute pre-flight check lead me to replace the noise makers in my truck.
These are in really bad shape, and I wouldn't be surprised to find out they're original (9years and 130k miles)
Two weekends ago, on May 7th I did my first round as a VE at a testing session.
We had 4 people take the Technician with 3 passing. 3 upgraded to general, and one of those attempted his extra.
All in all a good day!
Good luck, and looking forward to hearing you on the air.
BTW @stringtwelve, I'll be driving through NM from four corners down to Austin on June 4th, perhaps we can coordinate lunch/dinner or maybe just a coffee on the way through?
I leave in just over one day for Littleton, CO and just packed up the bed of the truck. I've got four 20L nato cans stashed in there, in addition to the three cases, a bunch of tools and radio supplies, tent, camp toilet, etc.
Tomorrow I need to pack the "Work Clothes" bag for my week at our...
On Sunday May 22, 2016 I will be embarking on my first solo road trip in a while. I'm starting out with a pretty non-exciting run from Bastrop, Texas (Near Austin) up to Littleton, Colorado. I'll be working in Littleton on the 23 through the 27th of May.
(If you're in the area and want to...
you'll need to pick up the antenna separate. The Midland I linked comes with a handy talky antenna, but as mentioned before... it's junk. (nowhere near 9 feet long.... :) )
Hand held radios are fine, as long as you connect them to a permanent antenna. The Citizens Band is 11M wavelength, so a 1/4 wave antenna is around 9 feet long. (think about holding that for a bit.)
As for "space is at a premium." I'd like to point you at three photos. It's possible to fit a...
Here is how much assembly I've completed on my 2M Luggable.
I still need to add:
A common ground strap.
A Power distribution block
A Power Gate (DC/DC ups)
Port for External Battery Hookup (disables internal power)
Connection for the Power Supply on the top deck
A Fan on the top deck.
Mounting...
I don't know how many of you have built something like an ARES/RACES Go Kit. I just started to assemble mine. It's currently going to be 2M only. However I imagine I'll eventually either add a second radio (Likely an FT-7800r) or replace the FT-2800r with an FT-7800r dual band.
If you've...
This are super nice, and I'd like to get two of them for longer overland trips. Just not for rock crawling trips where I spend a lot of time in the trees. :)
I replaced my Mobile HF rig (Kenwood TS-480Sat) with another Mobile HF Rig, that adds the 2M, and 70Cm bands (Icom IC-706 Mk.II G) Which included installing an LDG Z100 auto tuner under the seat, driven by the radio, and adding another dual band antenna (Yet to be done) to the back of the...
I have a Kenwood TS-480Sat HF+6M all mode 100w Mobile? Fully functional, 100w on all bands. Cosmetically it's an 8 (one scratch on the top of the case (pictured))
The control head mount also works on a desk, so this could be used pretty easily in the house.
$625 Plus shipping, or I can meet...
@NorthStar96 something like the Yaesu FT-7800r is tough to beat as a good dual band mobile. 2m/70cm is ideal for mobile communications between vehicles.
If you're looking at upgrading to your general, and willing to shell out a bit more coin for one radio that will do virtually everything...
I suspect a Subaru should make it down the beach, at least during low tide. I would NOT try to get a RWD truck down the beach, unless you have someone who's willing to use tow straps to get you back. :)
PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE RUN
In case anyone is interested - there is a multi club group heading for Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) on April 22-24. Doesn't mater what you drive or your experience level. We'll most likely be camping at the end of the island so you will need to bring...
