Between Kenwood, Yaesu, and Icom it's almost impossible to go wrong.
Two guys in Texas Overland got their license in the last year. One went with the TM-V71A, and the other went with the ID-2730A. Both are super happy with their decisions.
Those three brands really are like comparing Ford...
Sorry Tyler, I have no first hand experience with the site you listed. I have however used the Gordon West CDs, and Practice tests on QRZ.com
At the bottom of the first post is a section on "How Can You Get Licensed:" and "Training/Study Materials:"
I wasn't saying "don't use it much." I was saying your duty cycle is typically very low. 1 minute of transmitting, and 1 minute of listening is only a 50% duty cycle.
More likely you're doing 30 seconds to two minutes of transmitting, and 5 to 30 minutes of listening.
I think in the dash below the AM/FM stereo would be fine. If you're worried about heat, get a couple of 40mm computer fans, wire them to the ignition, and hot glue them to the rear of the radio, pulling air over the massive heat sink. If you're not doing LOTS of transmitting it'll be fine.

Also I'm unsure why image links from my gallery server aren't working. I'll post them on Imgur too, and update the links shortly. In the interim....

Also are there any cool stickers/patches for the area I can add to my rig? :)
I think we should try to add some good "Locations For Spotters To Stand" photos.
A spotter directly in front of the driver will get lost if the truck climbs an obstacle because of the hood for instance. Usually standing off to the driver's side of the vehicle, well out of the way is a good...
I'm writing this as a way to make sure the law in the United States is abundantly clear and also that I'm not casting judgement. I do want to make sure things are laid out clearly in an official thread....
This Post focuses on the idea of "race radios" for Baja Races that occur in Mexico...
I talked from Bastrop Texas, to the repeater at Hidden Falls Adventure Park outside Marble Falls, TX. According to Google Maps, that's just about 55 miles in a straight line.... That repeater can see about that far in every direction, so potentially 110 miles if the other person was opposite...
take a look at the "mobile antenna farm" link in my signature.
As for CB or Ham... honestly I think you should have both. Ham gear (especially HF) is the only reasonably sure fire way to get comms out regardless of how remote you are. VHF/UHF gear running FM is fantastic in groups where...
