Corral Hollow is a lot more washed out on the east end than previously and was graded on the west end this summer, so it's super dusty. That said, it's still just a dirt road. The East end can be done with a 2wd Tacoma. You don't need to worry about company or help. It's well traveled and...
The book is called Mojave Road Guide by Dennis Casebier. I just did it this spring and we only had to camp one night and we did the for real, entire trail from the Colorado river bank to Camp Cady.
There will be plenty of people on the road in October if you can't find a partner. Use Ken Casebier's Mojave Road Guide and have at it. Unless you are doing a lot of hiking it's really only a two day trip.
It depends what you mean by "the recommended camping area". If you mean the campgrounds on the south end near Utica, you are fine. It's just a dirt road. If you mean the creek a mile in from CA4, then absolutely not. Slick Rock is an off-road trail. Watch some videos.
I feel like some of the people replying haven't actually run the entire trail. Corral Hollow isn't a warm up for Slick Rock. Corral Hollow is a dirt road that gets a little harder on the East end with rocks no bigger that six inches. The only challenge is when there is a lot of mud or snow...
So, I got some input on weather conditions and it turns out last year was much worse and the snow is all cleared out now. Does anybody have any recommendations for places to wheel/explore near Crater Lake?

It's open all the way through. I did it two weeks ago. The new property owners are still allowing us to pass through their property while the bypass is created.

Do you have a lower elevation recommendation? I've never been to the area and a family member has planned it. She's looked into the weather but didn't consider the snow still on the ground.

I'm going to be camping with family at Mazama Campground near Crater Lake for a week at the end of June. I'm looking for day trips to explore and wheel in the area.

If you want to start at Cady you only have to go 18 miles on the trail before you hit Afton Canyon Campground. It's right before the water crossing and has pit toilets and shade over the tent areas.
