My backup camera is mounted on a tab in the center of the back of the roof rack. I can turn it on from the head unit without being in reverse and boy is that handy when in heavy traffic going through places like Dallas or Denver.
(Don't pay any attention to the crappy wire run, it was a rush...
About 9 months ago I lost track of the speed limit changes on a small FM road well after sunset and was stopped by the oldest Trooper I've ever met. After the normal introductions he is waiting for me to dig my license out and asks "what's with all the antennas?" He got that same look my wife...
I also double checked the manuals for the two current models of the popular $30 radio and both have (towards the end) warnings that they are not licensed for FRS/GMRS/MURS.

EDIT:
My suggestion about FRS bands has been brought to my attention as being against the law and I have learned something new tonight. So please don't do that.
I forgot about this thread...apparently the lawsuit fizzled, hence the market being flooded with other similar cups from other manufactures.
I've since purchased a lowball, 20oz, 30oz and a 32oz (thermos) of the RTIC brand. They all work great and they're all cheap. In Texas you can buy any...
My sticker is on the back glass of my van and it has done the same thing in less than a year. They are having problems holding up. If @Michael wants I can point him towards my sticker guy, the Winchester Undead sticker I have of about the same age is holding up really well.
I made mine for approximately $200 including the FarmTek decking and I'm just a dork with a welder. If I can make it then I believe that anyone can make it. Used contractor bars as the base and used 1" 13ga HREW for the floor and ladder, 1" 14ga HREW for the risers and top rail. Could I have...
I'm glad you're ok!
That appears that it could possibly be a delamination, aka a tread separation (stated without a detailed tire examination). If you had been on pavement and at normal speeds there is a good chance that the loss of fractional forces and lateral stability could have resulted...
The trasharoo works great as long as it's not left on all the time. Any cordura based item degrades from UV, from skydiving rigs to tactical gear, UV kills it all. Treated Sunforger canvas May last longer, but then there are other issues.
I have one that is branded from another...
The people high on meth or PCP (PCP made a come back for a bit for some stupid reason) that I fought ended up getting Tased. They all required multiple "rides" so I could get them into handcuffs. All of them ended up in a no-shit me or them fight. One guy I thought I was going to have to...
Throughout my previous career in full time law enforcement I will tell you that every single person I deployed OC spray against I had to still fight. Not just struggle into handcuffs, I mean straight up fight. Once they were cuffed and in the back of a patrol car they would then start yelling...
The local repeater guys had a neat idea: HF packet radio for text messaging (of sorts), my thought is to
That was the first thought, but it was ruled out for functionality issues. On this trip we encountered some of the worse topographic conditions for VHF/UHF you could come up with, a base...
After the GNE last month I'm thinking about testing up and putting a mobile HF rig in the family adventure van. I know a couple of you have experience in such things and I wanted to know if I was barking up the wrong tree.
During the GNE the 2M communications between members of our group went...
These photos are the tip of the iceberg, I'm still going through all the frames shot. I'm going to have some things coming up on my blog as a wrap for the trip as well as some posted on the Adventurist Life blog and magazine.
Thanks for following along! It was and I've still need to another service on the van after driving so many hard miles up and down mountains throughout the western US. Now the hard part will be to match or exceed this trip next year! Right now the common thought is basing the trip around the...
After 5350 miles, 5 national parks, 21 days and more whiskey than should be allowed, the massive multi-family adventure has drawn to a close. Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, Arches and Mesa Verde, the outdoors were epic and I long for some of that north west Montana weather right now back in...
Wired up the bumper bar, the stock headlights suck and I live out in the county, so maybe I won't hit a deer this year? Those are cheapo Chinese bars, about $80 for the pair. So far the rack mounted bar is doing well, it's been installed for about 6 months.
Depending on the fasteners used it could be ok. I had my civil engineer wife do the load calculations to tell me what tubing to use for my roof rack, so I cheated.
