Thoughts on this article-the 10 commandments of modifying an overland vehicle

First, this is a great topic, a great conversation and an excellent example of why this community is the finest on the Internet. I think I just liked half the posts in this thread. Overlanding, like hiking and camping defy cut and dry explanations. They are what people make of them, what you...

    Western Washington Trip

Sounds great! The ape caves a pretty cool, I've been there a few times and they're always fun. I think I'm going to add slate peak road to my to do list. I haven't heard of it before.

    Downloadable bumper plans

Put another 90 minutes into the bumper this weekend. Welded the frame mounts solid, I think I'm going to add some bracing to them for greater lateral strength though. The more I look at them the less I like the design as it stands. Then I welded the grill slats into the center 5 slots of the...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Yesterday expertly maneuvered my Jeep between obstacles, got some dirt under the tires and used some recovery gear! (I backed through the narrow vehicle gate in my fence to pull a couple of small trees out of the backyard because digging is not fun.) Today I had an hour to work on my bumper too.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I put new bulbs in the headlights on my wife's Chevy Traverse. I had to access the bulbs by going through the wheel well and removing the inner fender liner. Dumbest design I've ever seen.

Grey smoke out of my tailpipe

From what I've read head issues aren't uncommon on the 4.7. Sucks it happened to you.

2001 Jeep XJ build (Blue Steel)

I have mods I could actually use to spend that on at the moment. If my WJ gets a snorkel, it will be like a crown on my otherwise complete Jeep.

    NW Overland Rally

The registration page lists day of prices, so I'm assuming you could. I'd email them to be certain though.

War Machine: The Silver 01 Jeep Wj

That's what I meant by surplus, my squadron transitioned to a new airframe, so we had to toss out all the old stuff from the old airframe. I grabbed one.

2001 Jeep XJ build (Blue Steel)

Adding a snorkel is awesome! One day I will have a vehicle with a snorkel for no other reason than its cool.

    Tools, brands, stores, prefernces

I buy craftsman when I can, usually from either the base exchange or my local ace. If I can't find what I need there I'll go to either Home Depot or Lowes and pick up Husky or Cobalt respectively. They seem good quality and carry a lifetime warranty. My dad has a full snap on set that I'm...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I was able to use the cargo tie downs in the floor and on the sides for the bottom and middle straps. I installed some tie down points from Home Depot on the ceiling. I think it's in my build post, briefly but I'm not positive.
