Both will cost you in fuel milage so that really isn’t much of factor.
What you need to answer is how often you will use either. How often will you have to climb up to the rack? Are you willing to get some needed item, or put stuff on the rack in bad weather? However a roof rack generally won’t...
I had to look that up. I had a 91 explorer. Super reliable. The motor was a pig, but endlessly reliable. Apparently quality went down starting in 2002, and there are a lot of complaints about the issues you mentioned. Getting a first or second gen explorer is a good option if you really like...
A topic has come up on another board about ABS and whether or not it should be disabled while off-road. I would love to hear what every thinks about this.
Personally I am slightly biased for Isuzu.
Pros:
Cheap as all get out. (You get them for less than $5k)
Parts are still readily available.
It’s old enough you don’t mind drilling holes or welding on it.
Very capable off-road.
Decent driving on road.
However, it is not without issues...
Thanks to the Army I am now stationed near Augusta. Also thanks to the Army I have had little time to go exploring. I have heard of two things, 1) Trey (Maybe Tray?) Mountain, and 2) The Georgia Traverse. Next weekend I have 4 days off and plan to try Trey Mountain.
I was watching a Ronny Dahl video yesterday and there was one gas engine vehicle in the mix. Before going through a particularly deep water crossing, they sprayed WD40 on the electrical connections (spark plug wires, coil, etc...).
Does this really do anything to prevent water incursion? Or is...
I went the same route. I run 265/70/16, so just a bit smaller but not much. I was convinced about narrow tire over wide for 99% of terrain after working with the forestry service for a summer. They all all run very narrow tires compared to most other off-roaders. True they are just about...
It’s been a while, so I though I would give an update.
Since I posted last, I have done an IMMENSE amount of work getting the drive train sorted. I have also added a 12,000 lbs winch (mounted behind the plastic bumper on a DIY mount since nobody makes one for this), a CB, XM Radio (trail tunes...
I still run a CB radio. I have one near me for most of my life. Like you I went into communications in the military. I had a HAM license a long time ago, but I allowed to lapse. I just wasn’t using it. Now I use a CB and hand held FRS/GMRS (yes I have a license) radios for spotting on the trail...
I am thinking of using Mostaliner on my little Isuzu. The paint is shot anyway, and seems like a cost effective way to freshen up the old girl.
If so:
1) Are you happy with it?
2) Did you do it yourself?
3) Would you do it again?
4) Did you roll or spray on?
5) What issues did you run into...
