    Overland Weight reduction

I just ditched my personal pack in protest of my BF's HUGE pack, which he won't modify. I got all my gear in a size small Sea-to-Summit compression bag. Only about 3lb savings, but 1/4 of the size locked down, small enough to fit in the "trench" of the JKU. Just lime with Kevin, space is as much...

4Runner TRD Pro vs Rubicon Unlimited

There was a thread comparing these exact two running around here the past few weeks, but damned if I can find it. The biggest issue aside from aesthetics and comfort came down to the solid axles of the Rubicon vs. Toyota's independent suspension. IIRC, the Toyota made a better daily driver and...

2008 Ford Escape XLT - Best bang-for-buck overland mods?

Traction boards and a receiver hitch also transfer well, but she doesn't like chains on the rear tires, ripped the abs wiring out. Easy fix, but the rears have little clearance.

2008 Ford Escape XLT - Best bang-for-buck overland mods?

I've got a Minnesota 2003 rustwagon Escape that's been "overlanding" more places than either Jeeps in terms of miles and nights slept in. Load bars and a Space Case carry a ton, in fact we packed the hell out of it to evacuate during a wildfire and had the capability to escape via the logging...

    Overland Weight reduction

Awesome. How long did it take, I've heard it's a bear to get those seats out. This is the route I need to go. I don't really need that much water as we stay mostly in the mountains or Northern US, but repurposing that space and having a platform for my two fur brats would be more useful...

    Alternate ways to prepare meals

I like using one of our solar cookers at base camp, we use them often at the cabin so it's just business as usual at camp. I was looking at one of those road pro cookers, especially as the chill will start coming on in about a month up here in the mountains. I'll have to put everything in a...

2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

Both Magruder and Lolo are open, we did it last weekend. One guy in our group pulled a Moby1 expedition trailer behind an Avalanche. His brakes heated up and he had a power steering issue, but everything is good to go. A motorcyclist got chased by a bear, but huckleberries are ripening on the...

    Overland Weight reduction

All of mine were tightened down with channel locks as we were in 140 miles of roots, rocks and washboards that would loosen anything not bolted or welded down, checked every stop. Ironically, I was parked right next to a running Hamilton Police cruiser. Pretty ballsy move, they could have got...

    Overlanding with cast iron skillet

Cast iron is all we use, both overlanding at everyday here at the cabin. Salt, and scrunched up piece of foil to clean and then we place a paper towel, napkin, etc. on the cook surface and bottom if we're storing them packed and/or stacked.

    Overland Weight reduction

I got some weight reduction coming off the Magruder Corridor yesterday. My group stopped in Hamilton, MT for gas and groceries and someone clipped my two rear shackles. Good excuse to upgrade with some soft shackles and they'll stay inside. Glad that's all they got, I'd like to decide where i'm...

2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

Just got back off the Magruder to check the animals and meeting up with my group on the Lolo tomorrow. Magruder is dusty, but a Cadillac could drive it. I'm speaking of the 468road proper, not any side trails, Burnt Knob is still Burnt Knob, etc., but the biggest obstacle is the epic amounts of...

    Trail maintenance questions

We follow the same NF rules for collecting firewood by permit, we cut a path and make sure there are no piles left in the road, just set on the side. If the tree crosses water, or we have to trample wet areas, we leave it alone on that side. The Fed crews who do trailwork around our cabin do...

OB Spokane Weekly Greet And Meet

I was wondering about it. Actually ventured off the mountain and headed up for another overland group last week and was hoping to have a double header. At least I know Spokane a little better now.

2017 Lolo Motorway Recon & Trail conditions

Both Magruder and Lolo are open. Loggers are decking at the Pete Forks CG, so exercise caution, check CB ch 7 or 8 if you're in the area before 3pm weekdays. The trucks are running down FR 103, but the jct will still be challenging with equipment running around.

How do you get wet ?

I've got an Advanced Elements 'yak. My 60lb Borador will fit on the deck, but my fat yellow lab won't. Never thought I'd like an inflatable as I've beat up sit on top hard kayaks, but she's held up for 6 years now on lakes and rivers, even bouncing off rocks. If I didn't get the boat for free...

    Spices what do you carry

Bullion! Good answer! Good answer! Im lacking sauces and my boyfriend can't handle any heat, hence the Reaper powder for me. I started packing straws with spices in lieu of big bottles, good rainy day project.

BFG A/T K02 or TOYO OPEN COUNTRY A/T II?

I have the Toyo AT 2's on one Jeep, can't wait till they wear out, which at this rate will be at less than 20k miles on them. I'm 95% dirt, gravel and bullrock, 4-5 months of snow and ice, and I swear I can see the wear weekly. Constantly rotating to get more mileage out of them. My boyfriend...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Tried out the new Staun's tire deflators I just switched to in preparation for a spin up the Magruder Corridor later this week and immediately found I had a bad valve core. Quickly got it switched out with a spare core and ordered some restock for the tire kit.
