Welcome! Check out Desert Valley Overlanders on Facebook. We are in the ABQ metro and there are a bunch of really great folks who are part of this group. We are family and pet friendly and we have runs, camping trips, and other gatherings. COVID has put a bit of a damper on things over the past...
The areas I mentioned in the post are all accessible in the winter time. My suggestion would be the Jemez Mountains. This area is just north and west of Albuquerque and sees some heavy use pretty much all year. Hence, many of the Forest Service Roads tend to be somewhat travelled and packed...
Chloride Canyon has some difficult sections (steep, rocky, and tight switch-backs), but with 4WD and a little ground clearance, you should be good. I towed my teardrop and didn't have any issues.
Howdy - we did the middle section of the BDR (TorC to Grants), which included Chloride Canyon a few months back. It was spectacular. That was a bit north of you. But, I loved our trip through the Gila and want to do more exploring. Likely we won''t be back on the trail until spring.
This was last year. It was a weekend and the trail and the top parking area was PACKED with UTVs. We were the only trucks up there. Unfortunately, a few (or many) bad apples destroy the beauty for everyone else. The area around the the lake was littered with poop and TP, and trash. It was awful...
That's unfortunate about the Triton. I just bought one. I hope that mine fares better. I have heard good things about the Camp Chef Everest, and of course the Partner Steel. It's just the Partners are pretty pricey and I don't think you can get them quickly. I think REI had the Camp Chefs...
As mentioned previously, it really depends on where you are planning on travelling. If maintained Forest Service roads are in your plans, then the Subbie will do you just fine. If you get into some stuff where clearance matters, you'll need something based on a truck chassis. I have had Toyotas...
Although I don't have the Skottle brand - I did a homemade disc cooker with a single Coleman burner, it uses the same 1-lb bottle. Go with this hose
to connect to a large LP tank. The burner should have the regulator so, you just need the hose. It comes in varied length. I didn't need a super...
My best bud Brett and my adventure pup Banjo. Banjo loves to sit on laps for anyone riding shotgun in the 4R. We lost Brett earlier this year to a terrible disease. This was the last time we met for our annual camp/fishing trip in Colorado. I will miss the adventures that Brett and I have...
I concur with @1derer on Tuweep. Here's another in the area (North Rim of the Grand Canyon) - Kelly Point. Similar trek of long dirt road to get there, very remote, amazing sunrise and sunsets over the GC, and I would consider "Epic."
As a former backpacker, I certainly understand there will be...
Epic. Love the photos from Top of the World. I've been up that twice and always a visual treat. As a fellow firefighter I am there with you in spirit. Programs like this are needed to help us replace the bad memories with good ones. I am thankful to folks who help us heal with amazing outreach...
Can't help but share this photo of my Adventure Pup Banjo. She goes everywhere with me and is an amazing travel partner. She rides shotgun, stays close by, loves to explore the streamside while I fly fish, and is a great trail dog. The only weakness she has is that she loves to roll in piles of...
I am not sure where I saw this before, but I did this "mod" for my trips this spring and summer. It works amazing. I line the trash can with a bigger trash bag and when the trip is done - BAM!
For Sale - offering up this Kelty Blockhouse Privacy Shelter (https://www.rei.com/product/101407) for $50 (purchased at REI for $80, now $100). Never used (set up once in my living room). Going in a different direction for a potty tent. Prefer local pick up, but willing to ship if you pay the...
