There really are not that many things to look for 2010 and on. You can check the plastic t fittings near the heater core at the firewall to make sure they're not already broken but they should not be. As always check for rust. They are pretty simple vehicles. I love my 2012 pro 4x.
Very cool build! I love the cargo rack in the rear. I am mulling over a Maxterra bumper. Do you find it much of a hassle to open and close the tire carrier each time you have to access the rear hatch?
I have a Scanguage 2. I believe it has trouble reading trans temps for older 2nd gen Xterra but post 2010 or so on have no issues. The light on my scanguage does flicker at times which is a known issue that can be remedied by the firmware update. On fairly level highway towing I do not disengage...
Xterras come with a tranny cooler from the factory. I tow about 900 lbs regularly and only see temps rise in long slow steep climbs. I use a scan gauge to monitor tranny pan temp and torque converter temp. Works well.
frontier pro 4x is hard to beat. Bullet proof drivetrain and trans, as well as rear locker for a great price. I love my pro 4x Xterra. The aftermarket for accessories is a little tough though.
