I started out in a Samurai. It's an awesome little rig that will go just about anywhere.
I have since moved up to a larger vehicle but I still have the Samurai.
I'm using one of these. It will take an SD card and a SIM card. It has a decent amount of memory and so far has been trouble-free.
Alldocube 8.4" Tablet. $152.99
This stuff stays in the truck most of the time.
Phoenix P360S Pepper Gel is close at hand.
Counter Assault 32ft Bear Spray in the door pocket.
Legal Heat app on the phone to keep all the gun laws straight.
Full frame S&W 45 M&P 2.0 stored as needed to stay out of jail.
After a lunch stop, I spent 2 hours with a no-crank problem last Saturday. We were in the middle of the Francis Marion NF, so no cell coverage.
I travel with friends or family 90% of the time so at that point I had 4 options, fix it, flat tow it, use my InReach to message my wife to bring me...
That's not a mapping issue or a screen issue. That's a driver issue. If he can't not look at the screen, that's on him. There isn't a map in the world that will save him from being distracted. Tell him not to buy a car made in the last 10 years.
I use a tablet for the larger screen. I keep most of the Eastern USA maps on my tablet. I load specific maps on the cell phone and use it for backup and taking pictures. Giai will sync your photos, POIs, tracks, and maps across all platforms. Then when I'm looking for a picture or notes on a...
I camp in the summer in the Southeast fairly regularly. That's when we drag out the EndOver instead of a tent and camp somewhere with hookups. The H3T is rigged to be flat towed so we use the motorhome as a base camp and explore from there. It may not be overlanding but it's close enough and...
The correct answer is to use both. I use GIAI for 95% of my mapping. I run it on a dedicated tablet. It has worked perfectly every time and with all the layers, gives more and better information than a paper map. But, for that one time it doesn't, I have US and the state-specific atlas in the...
If you are looking in the $5k range, you won't get much in the Toyota and Land Rover world. Look for Chevrolets and Fords instead and you can probably find something that will do what you want.
This was $2750 in pre COVID dollars with 300k miles on it so probably $5k in todays dollars. I...

Also available is a separate file of POIs. It shows gas stops...
Mostly warm starts. A hot start would usually sputter once or twice and run fine. If it sat for a few days it would usually crank normally. If you shut it down for 30 minutes to run in the grocery store it would fire on 3-4 cylinders until it cleared the extra fuel out of the intake. It started...
Change your injectors. My XJ did the same thing. It turned out it had an injector that was leaking raw fuel into the intake when the engine was off. I was at 260k miles so I replaced all of the injectors and that solved the problem.
This one is a little cheaty and more glamping than camping. It's about 40 minutes from home so no long trek was made. There wasn't a tent involved or even 4WD. I slept in a king-size bed in a 40' motorhome parked in a field. It was, however, very peaceful and relaxing. And the sunrise in the...
