    Travel Hazard Plaster City CA.

I've always wanted to see Plaster City. It is mentioned by the characters in the 1963 film "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."

Gaia inreach mini 2 and iPad mini 6 … JUNK

When I looked at what Android tablets were available and for how much, the only ones who's cost was a significant savings over the admittedly overpriced cellular iPad Mini were low spec units with low end LCD displays and a feeble 16GB of memory.

Joshua Tree NP over Thanksgiving weekend trail suggestions

I've been on Old Dale Road both into and out of the park, and both Pinkham Canyon and Berdoo Canyon from the park into the Coachella Valley. Old Dale can offer a navigational challenge (to the navigationally challenged like me) when exiting the park northbound, but seemed easy going south...

    After the Campout

I did that religiously for years until on one trip I left 2 of the 4 tent poles at home because they're NOT stored with the tent. Now I keep them folded and with the tent while stored at home. No pole cords have lost elasticity for the last 20 years except one set of Marmot pole cords which...

Show me a Road Sign.....really any sign...

I thought they did a nice job with these new signs

    Lets see some trail photos!

Recently in the Mojave National Preserve. I got out to move some rocks. Just north of Corral No. 3 in the Cinder Cones area.

    Satellite Communications Thread and/or advice?

I had a satellite phone for about 10 years. I had it ONLY to use for emergencies, which meant that I never used it. Satellite pricing crept up over the years, so I changed it for a Garmin Montana 700i. I wanted the inReach communication function (which so far works as advertised) plus a...

Michael Heizer's Land Art pice City is complete.

I'd like to see it in person. One cannot rely on photos, reproductions, etc to determine the power and effect of an art piece. At $150 a visit, I'll have to feel a bit richer than I do now.

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

I recently had an issue with Gaia on iOS. Complained, and was gotten back to within 2 days. The solution suggested was helpful, though they really need to develop a clear way for one subscriber to have different maps collections on different devices without having to trick the devices into not...

    Hand Pressure Camp Shower

I had the Zodi** Extreme unit, which was exactly this, and made out of stainless steel. Used it 3 or 4 trips, happily sold it to a guy who wanted a way to wash down his youngsters. Too big, too heavy, and the parabolic bottom superheated the Coleman propane stove when heating the water. **...

    1st Time Dispersed Camping

Generally, in actual National Parks campgrounds, security concerns and theft are nil. But...in NF/BLM campgrounds that are near big or small cities, I'd assume that sleazoids can be present. I like the low-budget tent as placeholder idea. Yellow post sites are marked because of extreme demand...

    Hand Pressure Camp Shower

Small size is important to me. After trying several devices (Big Kahuna, Zodi , early Nemo with the tiny fill hole(?), etc) I settled on this Nemo. When compacted for travel, it is 1/4 the size of the Hudson sprayer types. If I had less money, I could probably work with a bucket and a...

Gaia inreach mini 2 and iPad mini 6 … JUNK

You know that nice feeling you have when you get a new toy? That feeling was tamped down considerably by the price of the iPad mini six.

Gaia inreach mini 2 and iPad mini 6 … JUNK

I went option 2---iPad mini 6 (goodbye, Lightning connector). Gack, it was expensive. I already have a Garmin Montana 700i for inReach and in case the iPhone/iPad + Gaia fails.

Dual Battery - Optima vs Odyssey

Can't provide the comparison you're looking for, but Odyssey has been very good to me in a 2 batt setup. The house battery (used for fridge only and recharged fully at home between trips) from 2013 still works!

Is anyone having issues with Gaia GPS?

Recently, I was downloading some maps onto the phone at home (WiFi + fast internet service): EXTREMELY SLOW map downloads at any time of the day or night. If it was free, it'd be OK. But it's not free, and this slow download s**t is going to lose them a lot of paying customers if it continues.

    Digital inclinometer

There is not much point knowing the exact grade or tilt of a road unless you know it ahead of time (before you drive on it) AND know the tilt limits of your vehicle as currently loaded. However, it's interesting to know how tilted your vehicle got after passing through . I have a Lev-O-Guage...

Poll: When you camp, do you normally have cell service?

I like to have cellular data, mainly for entertainment purposes but also I get jobs through email and texts. I've got an inReach for the really remote places. I make a note of places that have cell service but are pleasantly remote.

    Re-fueling from your Gerry can

I use this type of nozzle on jerry cans. I use the plastic part shown at bottom to add approx. 20" of fuel hose, which, when filling, is pushed down into the vehicle's filler hole. Never spilled or even dripped, except once when I didn't hold the jerry can correctly and it blurped some gas out...
