    Sudden revelation

BF Goodrich All Terrian (AT KO2) is a well-known tough but expensive tire. That's what I have used on 4 vehicles over 24 years. However, it'd be a shame if you spent big $$$ on KO2s and then moved on to another vehicle in 10 K or 15K miles, leaving at least 35K available miles unused on the...

    Air Bag Jack?

You can make the OEM-style bottle jacks work if you carry some 1'x1' x3/4" plywood pieces that you can stack under the bottle jack to make it taller. Extra points if you drill fixing holes in the wood and carry at least a couple of bolts/wingnuts to solidly attach the wood to the jack. Helps in...

    First night overlanding

It's nice when one's vehicle can provide shelter. Keeps things simple. The 2nd gen Trooper has a super space efficient interior design.

    Tyre Recommendations

The BFG AT/KO2's that you apparently had when the picture was taken are a go-to tyre in the USA and much of the world. You were dissatisfied with their performance?

Mojave desert in the rain. Stay home or full speed ahead?

Yeah... no need to turn a vacation into a grueling survival test!

    Tired Overlander

I'm tired of loading all the gear into the daily driver. I'm tired of driving on the Interstates. In general, while I crave being in a new and interesting/beautiful place, the actual travel to get there is of little interest.

Mojave desert in the rain. Stay home or full speed ahead?

I would not avoid the Mojave Desert just because rain/snow is forecast. I would...and have...avoided going to the Mojave if high (and cold) winds are forecast. That's my preference. I have been in various parts of the Mojave Desert while it rains in the winter time. Usually winter rain is...

    KOFA Queen Canyon Run

A friend and I took 2 vehicles and 4 days to do a clockwise loop around KOFA, starting in this area. On the northeast side was the absolute roughest few miles of dirt/rock road I had ever been on in my '91 Toyota 4WD truck. Extremely scenic area.

    Doesn’t affect us

The state, or the private businesses who depend on the local attractions being in good shape and pleasant places to visit, have probably conducted market research that shows that the folks who visit that area as hikers /campers/non-abusive 4 wheelers are majorly turned off by OHV yahooism and...

Is anybody actually getting out ? (Edit)

I always think I'd like to make a little photo story to share here or on EP, but once out "in country" I've got other things to do. Generally, it's 1) Get there, and 2) Get out of the damn car and set up camp, hike, explore. I work on documentary TV for a living, so I seek to make my vacation...

    Rude Overland Vehicle Etiquette

Correct. You are obligated to move over for any and every idiot that wants to go faster, even if you can clearly see that the idiot's behavior is going to acheive nothing.

    Best Nav app?

Gaia seems to still offer their "regular" mambership at $20/year. That's pretty cheap.

    Palm Canyon, AZ

I went there a year ago and was disappointed that one cannot actually visit Palm Canyon without mountaineering gear or a helicopter.

    Best Nav app?

You can get a mapping app, and only use the functions you want. I, for example, 1)want to see where I am on a map, 2)be able to mark and name waypoints, and 3)occasionally record where I go as a track line on the map. That's it...that's all I need. The other functions are there for those...

Death Valley & Mojave Road in March

IMO Lippincott Road is best going down, mainly because you see the big sky view of the whole Saline valley instead of the next 15 feet of road ahead. Dedeckera Canyon should be substantially easier going up from Steele Pass rather than down from Eureka Dunes, because it's easier to go down the...

Death Valley & Mojave Road in March

Is it possible to hit Saline Valley hot springs, Race Track, and Lippincott Pass along with a good chunk of the Mojave Road in that time? Yes, however..... You'd be in the drivers seat most of each day. If that's your thing, OK. I suggest going to Death Valley OR Mojave Preserve. Death...

    Tablet GPS accessories

If you don't need an external antenna for GPS on your phone, you probably don't need one for a GPS-enabled tablet. You need a way to power it (w/ backup?) , and a way to hold it where you want it(mount or bracket). On my tablet I have Gaia GPS for the old USGS topo maps, plus Gaia's version of...
