    Electric powered overland vehicle

Oh, stop it. In another 20-25 years technologies we’ve not even heard of will be discovered. Do all the math you want but you do sound like my grandpa. He was born in 1887. As a young man he was completely against self powered vehicles. By the time he was 40 years old he had two gasoline...

These National Parks Will Require Reservations in 2022

I'm late to this party and as usual have a penny or two to contribute. Our first long trip was to the Gaspe' Peninsula back in 1997, about 1200 miles from home. We departed on Labor day. Our reasoning was, to us, quite sound. After Labor day meant all the kids were back to school,, so, no...

How do you cope when you're stuck at home?

When I retired some friends were concerned that I would just sit and watch TV. WOW, those friends didn't know me very well and have since been relegated to "positive business relationship" status. When we aren't on a long trip to the southwest, I'm either planning the next one, (my wife...

Is anything else recommended for solo besides PLB and Cell Phone?

Ha! Our kids insisted we get the PLB. Mother in law is 91, she gave up worrying about us decades ago ! LOL

Is anything else recommended for solo besides PLB and Cell Phone?

We carry a PLB, a CB, a GMRS, a handheld HAM and a cell phone. The CB and/or the GMRS might get out 10-15 miles so will never be counted upon for dire emergencies. I'd give 'em a try, one never knows, a repeater might be close enough for the GMRS or the HAM, and some one might be nearby for...

For those of you than run your fridge daily, what is the best power configuration you've found?

Until lithiums come way down in price, can withstand extreme temperatures and are easily / thoughtlessly maintained, AGMs are still the gold standard IMO. What alternator are you using? I won't be replacing mine till this one wears out, but that may be another 100,000 miles, so maybe never. Ha!

For those of you than run your fridge daily, what is the best power configuration you've found?

Dual AGMs give me roughly 100 ah. I’ve a fixed 100 watt solar panel up top and a portable 120watt panel to set up away from the vehicle when parked in the shade. Admittedly our vehicle is set up for the high plains and deserts, so when camping around here in the woods I keep a close eye on...

    Sleeping

I don’t know about creative, but over the years we have used, styrofoam pads, then an air mattress, then cots with styrofoam pads, then high end cots with roll up mattress. All these things in pretty much that order. Our sleeping bag preferences have evolved through the decades as well. Of all...

Basic Overland Toolkit Contents For Beginners?

Yea, vice grips, big pair, small stubbies and needle nose can come in handy for all sorts of things, but sockets and wrenches that’ll never be used on a vehicle?

Basic Overland Toolkit Contents For Beginners?

My tool bag weighs about 20 lbs. I do not carry a full set of tools that would easily double the weight and take up more cargo space. I carry only the size and type of tools necessary to repair my vehicle and the trailer. Example?: Nowhere on my vehicle is a 3/4” fastener, so, no sense in...

    Important Information For Moab

Excellent! I informed a couple of guys years ago that even driving off trail a few inches is not a good thing, 6” now, another 6” tomorrow and before long the trail is several feet wider. Then it gets closed down. They argued. I walked away. Sadly those kind of people will watch this and...

    Jet Boil ?

Ah, sadly I do get it. I referred to my MSR dragonfly, which I dare say will boil 2 liters of water in 2 min 10 seconds +/- depending on elevation. What I don’t get is the urgency to break the 2 minute barrier. 6,000 lb? I wish LOL

    Daily Distance

to the OPs question; . We used to cover 6 to 7 hundred miles per day heading west on blacktop roads. Now that I'm retired cut those numbers in half. Now we get off the interstates west of Missouri and take our time experiencing the great plains. We often joke that we are the High Plains...

    Water for extended travel

OP stated about a week of off grid travel. That’s just about what we are good for, 5-7 days off grid then finding a place to re-supply with gas, water & food. We have a pair of Frontrunner tanks in the trailer plumbed together for 20 gallons. We came close to running out once after 8 days out...

    Battery question

I’m completely different and it works well for us- Our vehicle is the power source. Two AGM batteries under the hood, Two solar panels, one fixed, the other portable, 100watts each. A Renogy charge controller. Two fridge freezers, big one for refrigeration the little one mounted where the...

    What is your biggest problem?

Don't get me started on that one. Here in Pennsylvania the closed up gates are open during hunting season. I've gotten as high up as the office of the state forrest's head person and our local state representative. The #1 reason? Locals using the areas as dumps. So, they gotta keep em closed or...

    My Lowes trailer build

Hey there Troy, A Dexter EZ Lube axle ordered from a local trailer sales & supply shop; The axles are 5 on 4.5 so I used 2” wheel spacers converted to 6 on 5 to fit the stock LX450 Wheels 16” wrapped in 285/75/16s ATs. The springs I finally have now after snapping a three leaf 3,500 lb set...

Is anyone having issues with Gaia GPS?

Inte Interesting; I gave Gaia a try a couple years ago and quite frankly hated it. It’s not easy to operate, you cannot see where you are going or where you are in relationship to the rest of the region, and I found it impossible to make an organic connection with it. I’m just old fashioned...
