    Shovels and Axes

Fiskars X11 axe- an old Boy Scout style hatchet, a SOG fold up shovel for camp and a stout flat shovel with a “D” handle for the wagon . We carry a small pocket shovel in our packs when hiking.

    Won’t start help

Decades ago I had this problem with an F-100, (yes, F100, I’m that old) back when the fuel tank used to be behind the seat. It’d fire right up in the morn, and get home at night, however, any more that that short 12 mile trip, it would not start if shut down. I’m thinking clogged filter in...

    LED Side Marker Lights

I’ve never ever understood people adjusting their mirrors to look down the side of a vehicle. Lean your head a bit to see the side of your truck in the mirrors. Even pulling a trailer. If I can see my trailer in the mirrors, I know I’m in trouble, cause it’s coming around.

Thule / Tepui Autana 3 Ruggedized: My Observations

Well, a nightmare for some is an uncomfortable dream that ends well, for others. Just last spring, while out west, a seam ripped on the annex, a short phone call, an email with photos and we had a brand new annex 5 days later. Now I have a faulty canopy & ripped annex up in the barn. I’ll...

Why does every winch bumper for new trucks look like optimus prime's helmet?

Lesser models than a 150? Don’t get me wrong, as I am a lifetime Ford pickup guy, but in the world wide market the 150 is scraping the bottom of the barrel and ARB is interested in maintaining a world market share.

    Daily driver overlanding

Well then, if fuel economy is nary a concern, stop hedging and get yourself a 70, 80 or 100 series Landcruiser.

    Daily driver overlanding

Absolutely agree with # 1 & #2, parts availability is still pretty good on the 80 series and there are more than a few guys with cottage industries making those little things that work. Witts End and solvefunction.com come to mind. Same is true of the Jeep TJ, once the learning curve is past and...

Lightforce Customer Service - Buyer Beware

Wow, I can’t imagine paying that much for a set of lights and then get burned. ( pun intended ) my old set of KCs are still burning strong after 10 years and they might have cost $150.00. You are correct about ARB, top notch company and always willing to discuss the pros & cons of their...

    Suspension options

Mine? The axle is centered on the 4x6 platform. My Son-in-law’s, he had one custom built, the axle is set back, even with his water tanks in the rear his tongue weight is way too heavy 250 lbs +/- and impossible to change it other than having the axled removed and centered. Good luck

    Thanksgiving Dinner

Nice, we almost did that, but at the 11th hour decided it would be best if we (my wife can’t stand her after about an hour either) tolerated one of my in laws so that we could spend the evening with the 93 & 91 year olds. In hindsight? Shoulda done it.

    Dometic faucet insites

I looked at this, I don't have one, but it is for one sole purpose. That's it. It will suck water from ones water container and dispense of it accordingly. A mistake I kept making, long ago was getting different things for each little task. The upstairs of my barn is full of that stuff. ( I'm...

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

Thankyou, that's why I mentioned that a PLB might be a better choice now. That's what I carry and even if I were to subscribe to starlink, (which I doubt0 , I'd still depend on the PLB, in addition to contacting family members that would know exactly what to do from their end. Redundancy? Yep...

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

in a very short time starlink will be available to anyone that purchases the app for their phone. All those expensive Satellite communication devices will soon be antiques. At this point an inexpensive PLB might be a better option. But for highway travel? Nah- plenty of traffic on the Trans Ca

    Oil pan drain plug

Big bummer on the back issues - Good luck with that- you can’t get up into Vt to find a good one? Gotta be somebody in Auburn.

    Oil pan drain plug

I wouldn’t trust a jeep dealership any more than I’d trust Jiffy lube. You need to find a mechanic and proceed to develope a positive business relationship with them. Or- DIY.

    Oil pan drain plug

My daughter had this problem with a newish VW. My first question to her was- who changes your oil? Jiffy lube- lesson learned.

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

Hey there, I’ve carried chains with me every time I’ve traveled long distance in my personal vehicle in the winter. I’ve never had to use them, but- one never knows. I’ve never had to use a spare tire, safety kit, tire repair kit, spare belts or hoses, but I keep carrying them, just in case...

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

You go! The 4Runner is a solid truck for that kind of journey. And honestly, some of the best drives we have ever taken were cross country ( upper states ) to the PNW and even more often up to Halifax, from Pennsylvania multiple times , in the dead of winter. There is something eerily...

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

I used to tell new drivers that when on snow covered roads, drive as if you have no brakes, because you don’t. Sell the canoe, you can always replace it, it’ll collect ice, snow and make your vehicle top heavy. Check weather forecasts hourly, don’t be the hero. Do not even attempt to drive on...
