    Cleaning Jerry cans

I would avoid using steel cans for drinking water, full stop, there are materials in there I wouldn't like in my drinking water not just iron oxide but lead and other base metals. Just go and get a new plastic one, or if you really need metal stainless steel. Where metal jerry cans were made for...

    BATWING Awning Version 1

It will be interesting to see how it lasts. One thing I noticed with my "Fox Wing" (Oztent Batwing), is the tubes are not simple tubes but are a "theta" section with the center bar vertical within the tube to provide rigidity.

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

Good News (maybe) *USA-GNG* is back up. I'm not available to run the net on July 22 or July 29, but if you want to start it up again please go ahead. I'm happy to send you the net control script if required.

    Electric powered overland vehicle

I've been watching this thread for a while. Solar-powered overlapping is possible even if not very practical. Link to an Australian 4x4 site: https://unsealed4x4.com.au/solar-powered-zooks-vs-simpson-desert/

For those of you than run your fridge daily, what is the best power configuration you've found?

I just run 2 x 130Ah AGM's, charged through a Redarc DC/DC Charger. The van has a smart alternator and the main electrics actually run at around 10V so I can't run it off that, the DC/DC is a special low voltage version (one of the first ones ever made). Runs good for a week at home, especially...

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

Currently, there is no net. The *STARLINK* Echolink server has been removed. We moved back to the old *USA-GNG* but that is currently not working either. I'm open to ideas on how we might get this net back on the air. The other problem we had is getting network controllers for the net. It...

    Daily Distance

When I'm out trying to enjoy Overlanding, I typically aim to travel no more than 500km (300mi) even with the distances in Australia. Obviously less, if the road is rough progress is slower. If I travel all day one day, I will usually stop for at least a full day (2 nights). Take time to enjoy...

Canopy - Australian to American translation

Sometimes in Australia, we put a canopy on the back of our utes. They provide some security and weather protection for the gear in the tray and are usually made of fibreglass (FRP). In looking for a potential American-based Overlanding vehicle, I'm trying to figure out the terminology of a...

    Overlanding with bears?

I'm not from North America so I'm not so familiar with the behaviour of bears. When I was cycling camping there were signs to report bears because that would be unusual in the areas I was in. Is there a time when bears are more active? Are they a problem if I leave my car and go for a hike...

FACEBOOK GROUP: Canada - Atlantic Region

Are OB members not from Atlantic Canada welcome? I don't want to interfere but there are many places throughout the world, especially in North America where I'd like to go Overlanding someday.

    Overlanding Tips for Latin America

Excellent ideas Eric. I think a lot of this is common sense anywhere in the world, not just in Latin America.

Trip Planning - Where to go in the Northwest

Oregon is great, I spent about 3 weeks there some years ago but didn't get far from the coast. Currently, the plan is to fill in my time between AK and going to Descend on Bend, a van event (I'm into vans even if the vehicle I have in the US is something else) at the end of August. Followed up...

    Camp security

I think a lot depends on the location. In some places, you can leave everything set up and in some places, you wouldn't. Put your valuables away. Most people won't mess with your vehicle and items attached to it. They are more likely to pick up items just laying around. Think like a potential...

That's good information. And knowing about the permit is always better in advance.

Trip Planning - Where to go in the Northwest

There aren't any deserts here in Tasmania, our climate is similar to the PNW, currently with lots of snow here this winter. There are plenty of deserts on the list elsewhere in the US though. The rough route plan, at this stage, takes me to Tuktoyaktuk in late June/early July then back via AK...

Trip Planning - Where to go in the Northwest

I'm planning a trip to North America. It probably won't happen for a couple of years. I'd like to have a good idea of what my itinerary might be as it will help with visa applications and I also don't want to waste my limited time in the US. I have a couple of events that I plan to attend, in...

    Australians, Where are you?

Is your member number your old AUS postcode? I lived in the original Button's House, out the front of the copperware workshop, on Eastland Drive for a while.
