    Do You Carry Spare Parts?

Parts as such? For our South American trip we took air, oil, and fuel filters with us, along with brake pads, timing belt, and bulbs & fuses. in Africa we reduced this to an air filter, timing belt, and bulbs & fuses; and in Australia cut back further to spare bulbs, fuses, and a timing belt...

    What is Overlanding?

Thank you - I'm familiar with the first, have never come across the second before.

    External Fuel Tanks

In our case - highway fuel consumption is around 16.7 L/100 Km, the best we've seen is 15.0 L/100 Km. "offroad" consumption varies depending on terrain,. however the highest we've seen is about 27 L/100 Km, so 38% higher - this was in deep soft dunes.

    External Fuel Tanks

That would be enjoyable - you're obviously allowed out. We're not- except for "essential purposes" - so, I've been out twice in 5 months for meetings associated with ensuring the food supply chain, and several times (a few Km) for medical reasons. Food is delivered.

    External Fuel Tanks

Hmm - I've filled (half a tank) once since January...! Not allowed out except for essentials. We've covered 665 Km since Dec 10th! 50 miles a month...

    What is "gatekeeping"?

    External Fuel Tanks

Internal extra fuel tank? Negative: takes up space and adds weight when empty (and obviously when full) - you cannot remove an internal extra tank easily for a trip when you don't need it. We prefer to use the space for other kit. Positive: The CoG is kept low, no problem with ferries, less...

    What is Overlanding?

Actually, yes it is: "at least two or more (sic)" of the following: 1. Remote locations - yes 2. Cultures other than your own - if you're not inuit then yes 3. Under-explored or under-documented regions - depends on what this means, I guess, less explored than Vancouver, obviously yes; less...

FYI - Imogene Pass closed - Monsoon rains

    What is Overlanding?

I've used the Overland Journal definition for a while as a reference. However the key is to get out and explore - as OJ notes, this could be "a weekend trip 100 miles from home or a 10,000-mile expedition across another continent." OJ seeks to provide some more clarity with: 1. Remote...

    Phone mounts

We don't use phone mounts - we keep the phone in the central console when driving - don't use the phone much when driving (and never when driving alone) so no need to clog up the space. We already have the GPS and the GoPro set up and don't want to add more.

    Water Storage

We have the 44L Frontrunner footwell tank - it lasts at least a couple of weeks for the two of us. Obviously not practical if you have all six in the vehicle though. I guess you could put a couple on the roof.

which is your favorite method of going to the restroom when over landing?

If we're in a campsite then it'll probably have something, even if only a "long drop". If we're "wild camping" we're doing it to get away from others in which case pick a spot and go with @GEARS's approach.

    Things to consider/and need

Make sure your tyres are in good condition and manage pressures according to the route. If you'll need to "air down" (and up again) then a compressor is good to have - we use a small portable one. Take a tyre repair kit as well. Otherwise not much really. Some consider a refrigerator useful (we...

    Camp entertainment

Fireside, starlight, night sounds, wildlife, and enjoying being in the natural world... mostly. Once in a while (we're talking about multi-month trips here) we 'll watch a downloaded video on the iPad.

How many miles per day (or hours) do people budget to reach a destination?

We wanted to stay in Marfa but it was really busy when we arrived, so we ended up staying in Alpine. The Rodeo was on there and it was busy too. Didn't see any weird lights until after a few beers....

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Filled the tank! It was still 3/8 full, but decided to refresh the tank. The previous fill was on February 8th and the fill prior to that was December 5th - we're in tight lockdown here! At this rate a fulltank will last all year : )

    Diesel in the cold!

In Arctic Canada we used to leave the engines running 24 hours a day from November to March. I've seen truckers light fires under the engine to warm the fuel (not something I would recommend). Diesel sold in the Arctic has additives to keep the viscosity low, and most vehicles in Canada and...
