GPS noob here...
I have a '23 4Runner, which itself has GPS connectivity, I think, but how do you get constant GPS connectivity to your mapping app like Gaia or OB1? Mine seems to only currently have it when I have cell service.
Thanks!
No. Harbor Frieght sells the Badlands brand and Apex is their heavy duty winch series name. HF = Badlands = Apex. They have other series for lighter applications.
Nice thread revive @Throlocks. I’m in Cheyenne too. Not so “free” as you, but if you plan something, I might be open.
Can we skip the 307 stickers? Ha!
Very nice @irish44j! Thanks. I actually need to move my shovel mount. Can’t open the hatch with it there. It will likely fit right behind the spare though.
I suppose I'm most curious about which app does the best at the transition from the GPS functionality to none. Where I go there is no cell service/GPS connection more often than not. Looking at a mapping app on a phone is not conducive to success. Is that why a lot of you use tablets?
I think I’m finally done welding on this frankestinian monster. Put in the pieces to lift it 3” and reinforced the tongue today. Hadn’t touched it for a few weeks, but now it’s ready to paint once the weather warms up enough. Hopefully in a couple weekends.
I ran across a disappointing mess at a camping/parking site in Pike National Forest this last weekend. I picked up what little I was willing to but I was not equipped to deal with their USED TOILET PAPER!! Just laying there on the ground. What. the. heck. (That's not the word I used then.)...
So I tried to exercise my mapping skills for a short trip this weekend and discovered I need more edumacation, or at least a reminder that we should not rely on the fancy GPS maps where we're exploring:
Google Maps does not let you save a route. It will let you save locations, but not a route...
I think I'm done adding heavy stuff to the rig. (Besides connecting a trailer to it. And carrying people...) Very glad I chose the heavy duty Ironman4x4 rear lift option to compensate. I would have only had ~550 lbs of payload left otherwise. The lift specs tell me it brings it back up to 1,200...
Signed up for Gaia a few days ago and in messing around with it, I can't seem to get it to focus on overlanding vs hiking. It seems most things focus on hiking. I see how to create an overland focused route, but how about just general browsing?
Dang...that's awesome.
I had a 1954 modded one for a while. Had the Chevy 350 in it. I loved driving that thing. Youthful stupidity and circumstances lost it. Dangit.
Well son uv a.... The fenders from eTrailers were waaaaay too small. I thought they all came in 9" or 10" wide and at least 31" across. These weren't even close. What the heck?
Oh well. On to building my own.
I second NMNomad's suggestion, followed closely by renting the vehicle you might like to try. Or even multiple different vehicles, if you're going for 2 months.
It sounds like you already know you enjoy camping/overlanding. If you're not sure, I suggest the cheapest route.
