    Newbie comms questions (HAM/GMRS/APRS)

There is a story online for one very good use for crossband. If you are dealing with a situation off the trail and need to reach help your rigs crossband could save lives. If someone were in medical distress off a trail or down a gulley you could relay info out from the scene while staying in...

    Why Ham over GMRS?

For me it was CB first then HAM and later FRS (Canada eh!). Our 4x4 club volunteered with local car rallies doing recoveries (much fun) and we combined with radio operators from the local radio club. As time went on we saw the value in using HAM and became licensed so we did not have to drag...

    Why Ham over GMRS?

I like badges how does one get this one? The short answer is one is better than the other. The caveat here though is if no one has the one you are using the whole point of which is better becomes moot.

    WA BDR Planning

I have run WABDR north from Cashmere a couple of times. The last time I learned two things that are important. The first is in summer that valley gets hot very hot. We had a solid week of 40C plus temps and it cooked us. We climbed endlessly it seemed and the loaded rigs were taxed with the...

    Ask About Gaia GPS!

Well I started out in one direction and turned in another with Gaia. I was working on APRSGTE and while getting all the gear together realised the the Samsung tablet needed could also do mapping. I have been using a dedicated Garmin GPS for a few years and Lowrance before that. I think the...

    1/4 wave....1/2 wave 2M

I go the other way but thanks to NMO I use two antennas. I use 1/4 for in town so my rig can clear the garage door. I use ANLI EX-270HD High Gain NMO DualBand VHF/UHF Mobile Ham Radio Antenna for out in the woods as it can take a beating. I carry the small 1/4 wave in the glove box in case I...
