Nice to see a board for this: My situation: My wife has some mobility issues and a service dog, that is always with her. I have been debating build ideas for my truck that would work for both of them. I am down to basically 2 ideas, both owith their pros and cons. 1) As is our current setup...

UPDATE: Build is done, and rack has been installed. Might still need some tweaking, and did some Last minute after-thought add ons, but it is solid and doesn't look terrible. There is no roof clearance however, so I may have to lift it up on spacers.

Yeah, they can be hard to get a hold of. I bought mine off an old junk collector for 90.00 (it's a 90 ish pound anvil) so I got a good deal, but it's one of those things you just got to get lucky.

You're lucky if you can get them for a 1.00/lb, and especially if they are old manufacture, which tend to be better than the newer ones, unless you're buying high end which is $$$

Currently working on a new roof rack. I don't have all the fancy tools so can't weld or bend tubing etc. But this is what I came up with. Built with nuts, bolts, self-tapping screws and basic materials.

Lol. Will consider building out the back of my truck, but luckily the wife likes tenting. Just makes for some fridgid winter trips.

I like the IDEA of roof top tents, but to me, I feel like there can be a loss for practicality, mind you, I have never used one. -hight cost -weight on roof - they have to be packed up in order to use your vehicle. I can see the pros too though: the speed of setup, insulation, etc...

Yes, those are good as well... Though they can get very pricy. I bought a pair of cheap knockoff steel cans.... FYI... They seal well enough that if you have them on your roof rack in the sun they will inflate and warp under the pressure.... I now have one can that is creased and disfigured, but...

If get the military version. The civilian ones are thinner and don't seal as well. I have both. The red will self vent.

Scepter brand military jerrys seal super tight too. Canadian made, used by the military, super durable, and I believe they're cheaper than wavians.
