I've owned a 1991 Ford Explorer XLT 5-speed (4 door, auto hub delete) since new. Lifted somewhere north of 6 inches by Tom Malloy in about 2005. Rides better than stock and performs better than stock off-road. Currently running 33x12.5x15 mud tires on stock rims. Bilstein shocks, longer/re-arced springs, and suspension drop kits were part of Tom's mods. Re-geared when the 33' tires were added, and also added Eaton Tru Track limited-slip differentials front and rear.
I've been wheeling in the Anza Borrego desert since the mid 1980's when ATVs (three-wheelers) were still legal, and in trucks since about 1987 when a good friend bought one of the first Toyota 4Runners. When my friend bought a first-generation Toyota 4Runner in 1986 I stared experiencing the trails in a truck, and was hooked.
I know the Anza Borrego State Park better than most and find it diverse and fascinating. I find something new to explore almost every time I visit, and do enjoy getting out of the vehicle and exploring the terrain. I've also gotten fairly familiar with the trails around Big Bear and Red Rocks State Park as well. My furthest trip so far has been to Jackson Cabin Road east of Tucson, AZ for an overnight while visiting friends in Tucson. My first visit to the Mojave Road was in April of 1991, and have done that trail numerous times over the years.
I prefer challenges in the moderately rated variety but have been known to wheel on difficult rated trails, especially if there are bypasses available for the most challenging obstacles. I enjoy day trips as well as overnight trips.
