Wow, thank you all so much for your comments! I've been reading through them all and I really appreciate how much time everyone has taken to provide valuable insight.
My main takeaways are:
I should expect my F-150 to get hot when towing at the limit, but the transmission temperatures aren't a...
That’s a good point - maybe I’ve been blind to the gassers. I’d hope the fuel economy is still better than in the F-150 when towing, and that’d save a lot of weight compared to the diesels.
Thank you for the very detailed response - lots for me to think about there.
Just to touch on temperatures, I used the FORScan mod to show real temperatures. When we pulled over on the climb, ECT was at 248F and TCT has just reached 232F. The gauges were moving past the center point. That seems...
I found an F-250 specced the way I wanted on the lot and read the sticker on the door jam. It had the various upgraded GVWR, etc packages but its payload was only 2,500lbs. That’s why I started to think maybe I’d need an F-350.
I've just been looking at the DEI turbo shields. Sounds like it keeps the turbos from heating up the rest of the engine compartment, but is there any adverse impact to keeping that heat in the turbos?
That's exactly the kind of input I'm looking for, thank you. I don't really want to give up my F-150 - I've put lots of time, money and energy into it and really enjoy driving it. I just don't want to keep pouring time, money and energy into it if ultimately I'd be better off with a different...
Hi everyone! This isn't a build thread but I couldn't see a more logical place to put this and I would value this group's input.
Today we have a 2016 Ford F-150 Platinum SuperCrew 4x4 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and a 6.5ft bed. My partner and I have been full-time RVers traveling around the US...
@smritte thanks, that’s really good feedback! I’ve used the traction pads several times on other people’s rigs, just never my own.
But I’ll go through each item and make sure I’ve used it at least once - great suggestion about the tire repair kit! I thought I was going to need that a while back...
Over the past few years I’ve been slowly collecting more and more off-road gear. I wrote a blog post recently about the gear we carry, but I’d love to get this group’s opinion on what we’re missing.
For context, we used to live in the Bay Area until last summer when my girlfriend and I hit the...
I hadn’t even thought about the leak side of things but it makes sense that the water must displace the oil. Great point - thanks for raising it.
With that in mind, I agree with your rationale. As it turns out, I’m pretty confident I didn’t have any issues with the diffs (the shop didn’t report...
Honest opinion - bypass them if you can, plan on a diff oil change if you’re nervous about it, and just don’t stop! [emoji23]
We’re doing the Mojave Rd again in a few weeks (check out the Rally Point on 4/20), and I’m going to skip Afton Canyon. I’m glad I did it last time, but we live...
I hadn’t found that in my research. I ended up driving through it and it seemed fine. As a precaution I had the oil changed in both diffs a few months later (it was getting close to the 30k service anyway).
I will add, although I’m hesitant to raise unnecessary anxiety, that a ticking noise...
Our plan is to drive the Mojave Road from East to West, starting on Saturday April 20th and completing on Tuesday April 23rd - that's Easter weekend. We could also finish it a little bit faster on Monday 22nd if necessary. We're looking for up to 2-3 other rigs to join us on the journey. We have...
